aaSEPTEMBER 12, 2011

HORNS to HAVANA’s cultural exchange between the American jazz community and Cuban music students  was an extraordinary success.

In 2011, HORNS to HAVANA delivered acoustic jazz orchestras to four of Havana’s premier music conservatories,  Amadeo Roldán, Manuel Saumell, La Escuela Nacional de Arte, and Guillermo Tomás (located just outside  Havana in Guanabacoa). To these schools we also carried with us boxes of reeds, strings, bows, mouthpieces, drumsticks,  pads for saxes and clarinets, valve and slide oil for brass instruments, and a wide variety of parts to mend old or  broken instruments.

We were accompanied by a team of gifted musicians, led by Carlos Henriquez, who worked with Cuban students, and a  crack team of instrument artisans who spent the week bringing failing horns, woodwinds and stringed instruments back to life.  The students and  teachers of Havana expressed their appreciation for each part of our work with grace and enthusiasm.  No one who was  with us will ever forget the experience.

Many, many individual donors and institutions helped make this trip happen. Horns to Havana wishes to extend our  profound thanks to everyone who helped us bring our efforts to such a happy conclusion. who helped us bring our efforts to such a happy conclusion.

aaThe Musicians of Horns to Havana
The Jazz musicians who traveled with Horns to Havana in September, to teach and to work with and listen to young Cuban musicians, are entirely outstanding and original, without exception, a talented and experienced group.
